To ensure the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of IT infrastructure, systems, and networks, while safeguarding information assets through effective security management, compliance, and risk mitigation initiatives. The role also provides secondary end-user support and ensures a timely response to critical incidents.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Infrastructure & Systems Management

  • Server Maintenance: Assist in the administration of Windows Server environments and virtualization layers (Hyper-V/VMware).
  • Identity Management: Manage user lifecycle in Active Directory and Google Workspace (creating accounts, managing groups, and auditing permissions).
  • Backup & Recovery: Monitor daily backup jobs (SAN/NAS) and perform test restores to ensure data integrity.
  • Health Monitoring: Utilize monitoring tools to track server health, CPU/RAM usage, and storage thresholds, escalating anomalies to senior staff.
  • Cloud Administration: Support the new Google Workspace tenancy, including managing shared drives, mail flow rules, and security settings.

Network Administration

  • Connectivity Monitoring: Maintain uptime for LAN, WAN, and VPN tunnels.
  • Hardware Support: Assist in the physical racking, stacking, and basic configuration of switches, routers, and firewalls.
  • VLAN & DHCP Management: Handle routine requests for network segmentation and IP address management.
  • Security Monitoring: Monitor network traffic for unusual patterns and ensure wireless security protocols are active.

Security & Compliance

  • Patch Management: Execute automated patching schedules for servers and critical infrastructure.
  • Vulnerability Support: Assist in remediating findings from security scans and ensuring MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is enforced across all systems.
  • Audit Support: Help gather logs and system information for internal security audits or compliance checks.

Documentation

  • Infrastructure Mapping: Maintain up-to-date diagrams of the network layout and server topology.
  • Runbook Creation: Write clear, step-by-step instructions for recurring backend tasks (e.g., "How to provision a new Virtual Machine").
  • Change Logs: Maintain accurate records of all configuration changes made to the production environment.

Weekend Standby Rotation

  • Participate in a rotational weekend standby schedule to provide remote support for critical infrastructure incidents (e.g., server outages or network downtime).
  • Escalate complex problems to senior IT staff as required.
  • Ensure timely resolution and maintain accurate communication logs during standby periods.

QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Grade 12 Certificate (essential).
  • IT Diploma or equivalent qualification in Network management.
  • 3-5 years in a technical role with a focus on backend systems rather than end-user support.
  • Strong experience in Windows Server (2019/2022), virtualization, and SAN/NAS storage.
  • Solid understanding of the OSI model, TCP/IP, and how traffic flows through a firewall.
  • Experience with endpoint, application, and infrastructure security tools and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of PowerShell or Bash for automating simple tasks is a significant advantage.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and solve problems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
